‘Their care under our care matters:’ Renovating the Youngstown penitentiary
The Ohio Controlling Board approved over $1.2 million to update the water treatment system at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown.
The high-security, six-story correction facility is operated by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.
It’s located at 878 Coitsville-Hubbard Road in Youngstown.
State Rep. Lauren McNally (D-Youngstown) said it’s good to see this project moving along.
“Our state inmates are our responsibility, and our goal must always be rehabilitation. Their care while under our care matters,” said McNally.
During construction, crews will be replacing existing pipes in the facility and incorporating all six stories’ water control systems and alarms into one network.
According to McNally’s office, the new system is capable of softening the water for the entire main facility and will save on heating and cooling costs.
Here’s the breakdown of how the $1.2 million will be awarded to Prout Boiler Heating and Welding, Inc. in Youngstown and used as follows:
- $1.1 million to Prout Boiler Heating and Welding, Inc. for construction services.
- $2.3 million to OFCC for balance of OFCC project fee.
- $113,000 to owner’s contingency.
