The Mahoning Valley Historical Society officially purchased the IBM building in downtown Youngstown located at 250 East Federal St.

MVHS executive director Bill Lawson hosted a press conference on Tuesday at the newly-acquired property, previously owned by Mills Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation.

He explained the MVHS board of directors saw opportunities for more public interaction and community development in purchasing this property.

According to Lawson, the IBM building is over 45,000-square-feet of usable on the top three floors and in the lobby

The property includes over an acre of land, most of which is a paved parking lot for up to 100 vehicles.

The building has been maintained by owners for its 43-year tenure; Lawson said all floors are “easily adaptable for a variety of uses.”

A statement from the MVHS board of directors says: “Mahoning Valley Historical Society is very happy to join many long-standing businesses and institutions, and several more recent ones in this district, in furthering our mission to collect, preserve, teach and celebrate the history of the people of the Mahoning Valley.”

Here’s what they’re planning to do with the building:

MVHS is organizing a fundraising campaign for development projects at the IBM Building.

They’re hoping to raise money for a few projects.

First they want to create a secure, climate-controlled local collections storage center that has three-dimensional functions.

According to the statement, they’re also focusing on repairing and replacing exterior structural surfaces, windows and replacing the roofing.

Lastly, they’ll add ground floor museum spaces with a separate public entrance from the building lobby.

Visit the Mahoning Valley Historical Society for more information and future fundraising campaign updates.
