This week, an on-duty mail carrier’s arrow key was stolen in a robbery, according to investigating officers with the Boardman Police Department.

Police said an arrow key is used to open mailboxes and other lock boxes for letters; officers are still collecting evidence to identify the suspects in the robbery.

Police reports say three BPD officers responded to a call about a robbery on Wednesday afternoon on Melbourne Avenue in Boardman.

‘Where’sthe key, where’s the key?’

The mail carrier told police he was walking on the north side into a front yard on Melbourne Ave when an unknown male grabbed his legs from behind.

He said this caused him to fall to the ground and when the unknown man turned him over, there were three black males standing over him.

One of the suspects kept saying “Where’s the key, where’s the key?”

Then he said the male grabbed the key on his left belt loop and ripped it off.

According to the mail carrier, after they got the arrow key, the three subjects got into an old silver Pontiac car that was backed into a driveway at Melbourne Avenue and drove east.

Witnesses said the car was small, a late 1990’s to early 2000’s model with a temporary tag in the upper left rear window.

Officers collected video surveillance from neighbors that showed the car.

Who is the suspect?

Police said the suspect who took the key was in his twenties wearing a dark blue hoodie and had full black mask across his face.

The neighbor directly across the street provided police with surveillance camera footage, and a different neighbor who wasn’t home at the time told police they saw a silver car circle the block approximately six times before the incident.

Police reports didn’t clarify which mailboxes the key can open or in what neighborhoods.
