Singer, songwriter Taylor Borton coming back for first hometown shows
Meet Taylor Borton, a country music singer and songwriter who grew up in Trumbull County before relocating to Nashville in 2019 to kick-start her music career.
Borton graduated from Hubbard High School and moved to Nashville to study music at The Blackbird Academy.
Borton graduated with a degree in audio engineering, then released her first single and music video in 2020.
She’s just released a self-produced EP called Lyrics In My Head. There are a few songs on the EP, including Glove Box Lighter and My Opry, all written by Borton.
Borton said the songs are based on her experiences living in a new state far from home, finding yourself and being a self-motivator.
“It’s cool to be surrounded by so many other musicians here,” she said. “You have that motivation from each other, but at the same time, it’s still [competitive] so you still have to stay focused yourself and kind of motivate yourself. I kind of just write through what I’ve experienced, being here by myself for a couple of years. You experience a lot compared to what you would in a small town like Youngstown or Hubbard. I just tried to take those couple experiences and make them relatable.”
Home for the holidays
Next weekend, she’s coming home for two nights of holiday performances in the Mahoning Valley.
It’s her first set of live hometown performances since she moved on her music journey in 2019.
“I try to go home maybe twice a year, always during the holidays, but I never played during the holidays. This is my first time,” she said. “I missed it, and I have the following of old friends and family that always like to come and check in, so it’s cool to see them, too.”
The first hometown show starts at 7 p.m. Dec. 29 at Cork and Cap in Warren.
The second show starts at 6 p.m. Dec. 30 at Birdfish Brewing Co. in Columbiana.
There’s no fee to get in to the shows; she’ll have CDs of her new EP available for purchase at both shows.
Borton will also be accompanied by local musician Pete the V.
“It’s the first time that I’m bringing [another musician] with me, rather than just me playing acoustic for a few hours. I think that’ll bring some people in, to kind of see what that’s like. to bring a feel of what I’ve learned engaged here in Nashville. I think that’s always cool to bring that home and to, especially for the people that have followed me to show like the growth that I’ve done, you know, it’s always cool for them to experience that and hear some new stories and things that I’ve accomplished.
Borton said she started playing music ten years ago and took to the stages at local bars for her first gigs at 16.
“I would bring my parents along with me,” said Borton. “I would really just get in anywhere that they’d let me play. Just reach out and try to book those in Youngstown and surrounding cities, like Warren, Niles and Boardman.
She said she began by performing covers of traditional country music performed by artists like Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline, as well as newer artists like Lainey Wilson, Miranda Lambert and John Prine.
In the upcoming year, Borton will be back in Nashville, performing original music and hopes to get back to recording more songs soon.
