Why Penguins?

According to the NCAA, YSU is the only four-year Division I school whose mascot and team name is a penguin.

According to local records, the nickname was first given to YSU athletes on the basketball court ninety years ago.

The Youngstown men’s basketball team played against West Liberty Teacher’s College in West Virginia.

It was a January game and they were playing in an unheated gymnasium.

According to History of YSU, the were visibly cold as the game was about to start.

Their opponents noticed the men “flapping their arms and stamping their feet to keep warm,” while wearing black-and-white jerseys, which is where the penguin comparison came from.

The name stayed with YSU ever since; read more on Maag Library’s Archives about YSU’s first live penguin mascots, the first costumed mascot and how Penny the Penguin was introduced in 1986.
