City of Youngstown seeks feedback on safety upgrades for Boardman, Walnut Streets

The City of Youngstown Public Works Department seeks any comments from the community regarding a proposed construction project on a handful of streets.

The Boardman Street and Walnut Street restriping and safety upgrades project is available to view on the city of Youngstown’s website.

Here’s a brief breakdown of the details:

  • Crews will be restriping Boardman Street between Walnut Street and Market Street

  • Crews will be restriping Walnut Street between Front Street and Commerce Street.

  • new dedicated parallel and diagonal on-street parking

  • new brick and concrete walk and new curb

  • ramp installations to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards

  • new or upgraded crosswalks

  • improved lighting and new landscaping

  • installation of a new mid-block

  • crossing at Eastern Gateway Community College

  • new traffic control sign installations.

“Project-related issues include, but are not limited to, the effect of the project on residents, businesses, the local economy and historic or cultural resources,” according to Charles Shasho, deputy director of the City of Youngstown Public Works Department. “Comments received by Feb. 5, 2024 will be considered during this phase of project development, but all comments will be addressed.”

The project will cost $2,867,500 and is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2024.

According to the city, the project will be completed by late fall of 2025.
