Over 100,000 electric vehicle charging sessions reported on Ohio Turnpike
The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission achieved a milestone early in 2024, when the total number of electric vehicles (EV) charged on the 241-mile toll road surpassed more than 100,000 charging sessions.
“The number of EVs charged on the Ohio Turnpike has continued to increase steadily year over-year since 2019,” said Ferzan Ahmed, executive director of the turnpike commission. “As sales of EVs and plug-in hybrids continue to increase, we are considering options to increase the number of EV charging units at additional service plaza locations.”
The Ohio Turnpike’s EV charging infrastructure, which was established through a public/private partnership, currently offers 16 Electrify America charging units and 64 Tesla Supercharger units at eight service plazas, including the eastbound and westbound plazas located in Springfield Township in Mahoning County (milepost 237.2).
When did charging stations open on the Ohio Turnpike?
Electrify America first opened its charging stations on the Ohio Turnpike in 2019, followed by Tesla in 2021.
Eight units of Tesla Superchargers are located at each of the Mahoning County service plazas.
The Ohio Turnpike’s 14 service plazas are open 24-hours per day/every day and provide travelers with numerous amenities, including vehicle refueling options, restaurants, convenience stores, lounge areas, well-maintained restrooms, and more.
