Youngstown State University plans to expand access to education past the Mahoning Valley and further into northeast Ohio and the upper Ohio Valley.

YSU’s academic offerings are expanding in these areas because Eastern Gateway Community College paused registration and enrollment for students beyond this spring semester.

They’re working on a plan to transfer EGCC students’ credits and keep them on the path toward completing their degree, certificate, and credentials at YSU instead.

Today, a resolution was passed during the YSU Board of TrusteesTrustees’ quarterly meeting to support this plan.

‘Optimize a seamless continuation of academic program progress’

According to the board, the resolution “underscores the university’s commitment to facilitating a smooth continuation of academic program progress for current EGCC students.”

Students can get back on the path toward completing their degrees at YSU or at another community college in the area, which the Ohio Department of Higher Education outlined.

The trustees also authorized the administration to work with ODHE and other state agencies to financially transition EGCC academic programs to YSU, “ensuring the undertaking is financially sustainable for the university.”

In other words, the board wants to encourage a seamless continuation of academic program progress for EGCC students.

President Bill Johnson announced plans to expand YSU’s academic programs to college and high school College Credit Plus students in Upper Ohio Valley areas like Steubenville.

He announced YSU’s commitment to this at the Educational Service Center’s meeting of Superintendents in Steubenville last week.

“We are committed to ensuring that all students in our region have access to high-quality educational opportunities,” said Johnson. “This resolution reflects our dedication to supporting current EGCC students and expanding our academic offerings to better serve the needs of our community and the Upper Ohio Valley.”
