The 6th U.S. Congressional District seat has been up for grabs since former Congressman Bill Johnson took on the role of president at Youngstown State University this year.

Several candidates put their names on the ballots to fill the vacant seat in Congress, and two came out on top for the nominations.

Voters chose Salem’s Michael Rulli as their Republican candidate for Congress, while Michael Kripchak is the Democratic candidate, according to AP election results.

For the Democrats, Kripchak beat Rylan Finzer with 20,505 total votes, according to AP.

Rulli received 43,564 votes to beat opponents Reggie Stoltzfus and Rick Tsai.

The 6th district covers Mahoning, Columbiana and Stark counties.

Voters will decide between Rulli and Kripchak in a special Congressional election this summer on June 11, according to Gov. Mike DeWine’s office.
