There’s a special fundraiser being hosted by a Youngstown legend to help a local family whose 14-year-old son is in remission after being diagnosed with leukemia.

Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini connected with Demetrius Lockett through Akron Children’s Hospital, who was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 13 years old.

Although he is currently in remission, he’s still coping with the lingering effects leukemia has had on him and his family, such as vision and kidney issues.

Mancini is hosting a community bowling get-together in Boardman to raise money to help the Lockett family with day-to-day expenses.

When is the ‘Ellen Mancini Memorial Bowl?’

The fifth “Ellen Mancini Memorial Bowl” is happening at 3-9 p.m. on April 6 at Boardman Lanes.

“The people of Mahoning and Trumbull counties have always supported me in all of my endeavors, and I invite you to continue to support me through my Ray ‘Boom Boom’ Mancini Foundation,” Mancini said. “We are committed to helping those who are experiencing physical, mental and financial needs.”

During the event, proceeds will go directly to Lockett’s family to “support his ongoing perseverance.”

They’re hoping to provide the Lockett family with enough money to buy a car, as well as household items, clothes and gift cards for groceries and gas. According to Mancini, they’ve relied on friends and family for transportation to and from doctors appointments for Lockett.

Mancini described Lockett as someone who “remains determined to embrace life to the fullest” despite challenges.

“Please help us as we fight to get Demetrius and his family through this difficult time. Demetrius is a person of high moral character who just wants the opportunity to live a normal teenage life. Please, help us help him,” said Mancini.

Teams of five players registered for $200 each to participate; community members can still come in and make donations or participate in the basket raffle during the event next Saturday.
