Crews tearing down playground at Poland North Elementary due to safety concerns

“North Elementary playground deconstruction is underway,” superintendent Craig Hockenberry posted online.
“North Elementary playground deconstruction is underway,” superintendent Craig Hockenberry posted online.

Crews took apart a playground on Johnston Place in Poland due to safety concerns for kids using the equipment.

It’s the former playground for Poland North Elementary School; the school has sat vacant since 2016, according to WKBN.

In November of 2023, the district announced they’d be taking the playground apart due to “equipment and surfaces” deemed “damaged and dangerous.”

“Instead of investing in a playground at a vacant site we put our resources into building a new one at McKinley [Elementary] where over 600 kids use it daily for recess,” Craig Hockenberry, superintendent of Poland Local Schools, said in a Facebook post.

Hockenberry also said they had no way to supervise or secure the area.

Plans for the site aren’t set yet and the district said they’ll be working out the details in a few months.
