As you prepare for spring and consider hiring a contractor, it’s crucial to be aware of the prevalent home repair scams, a concern that the Ohio Emergency Management Agency is actively addressing.

“Unfortunately, there are individuals who take advantage of Ohioans who need home repair work after severe weather,” said Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. “We encourage everyone to remain vigilant and take their time to properly vet home repair companies.”

Scammers target homeowners who were impacted by storms, winds, or severe weather.

These scammers will brazenly demand payment for work they never intend to complete, leaving the unsuspecting homeowner in a deep financial pit.

According to the governor’s office, in many cases, the scammer will then either not return, leave the job incomplete, or use poor workmanship.

Below are three tips to remember if a contractor approaches you and you’re not sure about their legitimacy:

  • Check with the Better Business Bureau to see if the company has the required licensing.
  • Ask for a business card and information about the company and the work they do.
  • Tell them you need more time to consider the offer; if the contractor tries to pressure you into accepting their services immediately, you should report it as a potential scam.
