‘Astronomical:’ Mahoning Dog Warden saving strays, unable to accept dogs dropped off

The Mahoning County Dog Warden’s staff members are taking in homeless dogs and puppies every day who need medical treatment.

Like a new rescue named Wallace, who was treated for injuries yesterday after getting stuck inside a dryer’s exhaust vent. He was rescued from the laundry room at Hillbrook Apartments by the Mahoning County Deputy Dog Warden and got treatment for some burns at Medvet.

Five staff members are taking care of over 70 dogs daily and it’s cost over $52,000 in the first three months of 2024 to keep them all safe, fed and healthy.

Currently, they can’t take any animals surrendered over by owners.

“The number of phone calls coming in daily from people who want or need to re-home their dogs is at an all-time high,” the warden’s office wrote on Facebook. “The amount of homeless dogs is astronomical. There are not enough homes that are willing and able to take them in. Humans created this crisis and the cycle continues over and over again.”

How to help

The Friends Of Fido help raise money for treatment costs, food and shelter the homeless dogs of the Mahoning County Dog Warden. This mission is only possible because of the generosity and compassion of our local residents as well as supporters across the country.

“2024 is looking to be a record-setting year for the vet bills of the dogs at the Mahoning County Dog Warden,” the Friends of Fido wrote online.

Each daisy is a $20 donation and the proceeds go toward helping feed and care for the animals.

Physical donations have been coming in, but now there’s no more need or storage for things like blankets and towels.

They are looking for bags of food for the dogs, and other items which you can check out on their wishlist online and on Chewy.
