Man arrested after being accused of fighting with Youngstown police officers
A man was arrested and accused of fighting with Youngstown police officers after being pulled over for driving without registration and without headlights last Friday.
The report states that officers patrolling East Judson Avenue observed a white Chevrolet Malibu at 12:30 a.m. with no registration driving southbound on Rush Boulevard without its headlights on. The officers activated the cruiser’s overhead lights and siren to perform the traffic stop. The Malibu turned onto East Judson Avenue and then immediately into the backyard of a residence.
What police said happened during the traffic stop
The driver immediately became agitated when approached by the officers. The report states that he began to argue when asked for his information, complaining that they couldn’t pull him over since he was already home.
According to the report, the man was asked to exit the vehicle since he failed to identify himself. He refused the officers’ order, telling them, “Touch me and see what happens.”
After multiple attempts to verbally coax the man out of the vehicle, officers were forced to escort him out of the car physically. At this point, the report states that he became physically violent towards the officers, swinging his arms while pushing and pulling away from their grasp.
The report states that he continued to fight with the officers, being warned multiple times that if he did not calm down, he would be tased. After several warnings, an officer performed a dry stun on the man’s leg to try to control him, but he continued to resist.
Another officer used pepper spray, or mace, on the man’s face to finally subdue him and place him in handcuffs.
The man was charged with obstruction of official business and resisting arrest, as well as a traffic citation for two required headlights. He was transported to Mahoning County Jail, where he awaits an April 29 court date.
