Youngstown firefighters remember 19 colleagues with memorial ceremony
Youngstown firefighters met on the Spring Commons Bridge across from the fire station to honor their fallen colleagues.
The Youngstown Professional Firefighters Union hosted the ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday reading the names of 19 fallen city firefighters who lost their lives during duty.
“It is our privilege to honor our fallen firefighters and the sacrifice they made in service to this city. Firefighting is dangerous and sometimes tragic work, and these 19 names will forever be remembered by Local 312,” said Jon Racco, president of the Youngstown firefighters union.
During the remembrance ceremony for firefighters and families, a single rose was dropped into the Mahoning River.
Firefighters also did a final ringing of the bell and wreath dedication for their colleagues.
“How thankful we all should be to have men and women working on the front lines keeping this city safe everyday,” said Racco.
