Sidewalks are getting upgrades along part of State Route 46 in Trumbull County as part of a $40 million grant to make roads safer for pedestrians.

The Ohio Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Improvement Program is allocating $460,000 to improve the sidewalks and crosswalks along State Route 46 between Stewart and Seaborn Streets in Cortland.

It’s one of 27 new traffic safety projects focused on protecting pedestrians in 21 different counties, according to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine.

“Whether you walk, bike, ride, or drive, we owe it to everyone to make transportation in our state as safe and efficient as possible,” said DeWine. “These projects are engineered to keep everyone safe.”

In Ohio last year, pedestrian-involved crashes resulted in 150 deaths.
