Retired Youngstown police officer dies from injuries in motorcycle crash

The Youngstown Police Department is mourning the loss of a longtime officer with an even greater legacy of helping others around him.

Daniel Mikus, 66, passed away April 30 from injuries sustained during a motorcycle accident, according to his obituary.

Mikus spent 33 years with YPD before retiring from the force in 2014.

Before becoming a police officer, he also served as a U.S. Marine for four years.

While at YPD, Mikus worked to get a Bachelor’s degree in accounting from Youngstown State University.

After moving to Florida, he worked as a security guard at Manatee Memorial Hospital and spent time with fellow members of the motorcycle club, West Coast Florida Riders.

Calling hours begin today for family and friends in Mahoning County to pay their respects from 4 - 6 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home Poland Chapel, located at 2726 Center Road in Poland.

Additional calling hours will be held from 9 - 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 343 Via Mt Carmel Ave. in Youngstown.

Then there’s a mass of Catholic burial for Mikus at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church immediately following the morning calling hours on Wednesday.
