Rose Carter, executive director of A.C.T.I.O.N., made sure Youngstown residents who were displaced by the Realty Tower gas explosion had access to groceries.

On the first floor of the building in downtown Youngstown, there’s a Chase bank and residential apartments in the top floors of the building.

The explosion killed 27-year-old Akil Drake and injured seven people on May 28.

Residents who lived in the nearby International Towers had to evacuate when the building closed for inspection.

They’re waiting to hear from officials about if they’ll be able to move back into their apartments.

Organizations like A.C.T.I.O.N., the United Way, Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership and Bon Secours Mercy Health are stepping in to assist residents.

How is A.C.T.I.O.N. helping?

The Mahoning Valley Mobile Market is a partnership between A.C.T.I.O.N. and Flying High Inc.

They brought the van stocked with groceries right to International Towers residents last Friday who are staying at Boardman hotels.

International Towers residents received $25 vouchers to shop at the Mobile Market, and A.C.T.I.O.N. plans to come back with groceries for International Tower residents throughout the month.

“[We] would like to extend a special thank you to MYCAP for their outstanding work in providing vital housing assistance to those in need, and for generously funding over $100,000 worth of living expenses for displaced residents,” the A.C.T.I.O.N. team wrote. “We would also like to recognize the United Way for their role as a beacon of support, serving as a central hub that has helped connect those affected with the resources they require. This is a powerful example of the community coming together to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.”

To continue supporting residents throughout the next few weeks, the A.C.T.I.O.N. team is adding two more stops for the Mobile Market to make on July’s calendar:

  • 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on July 9. The event is open to everyone at Help Network at 1344 Fifth Ave. in Youngstown
  • 1 - 2:30 p.m. July 16 only for International Towers residents at Baymont Hotel

Here’s the full calendar for July:
