Ohio has allocated $650,000 for a new veterans center in Youngstown.

The Board of Mahoning County Commissioners and the Veteran’s Service Commission issued a press release stating that the Veterans Center is set to be in Belmont Avenue as a 23,000 square foot building.

“Co-locating Veterans services and paving the way for future Veterans housing will have exponential positive effects in the veteran community as well as revitalizing a key corridor in the City of Youngstown,” Brian Kennedy, President of the Veterans Service Commission said.

The center plans to have a secure client intake center, conference rooms, office space for one-on-one support services, event hall, and a garage for medical shuttles. The total project budget is estimated at $7 million.

“The Commissioners have been working with the Veterans Service Commission and the Western Reserve Port Authority for over a year trying to secure the right location and develop the best plan to serve the Veterans.” Mahoning County Commissioner David Ditzler said. “Working together, we were able to do more for the people of Mahoning County.”

Construction is expected to begin in a few months and the Veterans are expected to move into their new headquarters in the next calendar year.
