What’s happening at this weekend’s Youngstown Wine and Jazz Festival at Wean Park
Looking for entertaining live music and drinks downtown this weekend? Visit the Youngstown Wine and Jazz Festival on Saturday at Wean Park.
Doors open at 6 p.m. for the festival beginning at 7 p.m. featuring performances by Althea Rene and Jeff Kashiwa.
It’s part of the 2024 Premier Bank Community Event showcase happening this summer, as well as the thirtieth anniversary of Youngstown Jazz in the Park.
Tickets start at $10 online and in person at the Southwoods Health Box Office.
Althea Rene
Meet Althea Rene: a soul-jazz flutist focused on empowering other women wanting to make it in music.
She’s originally from Detroit where she worked as a county deputy sheriff during the day and performed at night.
In May 2013, Rene released “In the Flow” with Grammy award-winning producer Michael Broening.
Rene co-wrote this title track which made history as the first flute-featured single to be ranked number one on the Billboard and Smooth Jazz charts.
In 2018, she published an autobiography called “Becoming Chocolate Barbie - a guide for professional women in the music business.”
Jeff Kashiwa
Jeff Kashiwa is a longtime career saxophone player originally from Seattle.
The headlining saxophonist is known for performing contemporary smooth jazz around the world as a soloist. In the late 1990’s, he started out as a member of the Rippingtons and formed his own trio called The Sax Pack.
In addition to touring in the U.S., he’s currently giving back as a music teacher in Seattle and this year, released a new album called Luminoso.
