Trumbull County nonprofit invites community to street safety demonstration
A local nonprofit has invited the Mahoning Valley community to learn more about street safety at a demonstration event.
The Healthy Community Partnership’s Active Transportation team will soon hold its next next Safer Streets Series demonstration in Warren, Ohio.
It will be held N. Park Avenue on Aug. 6 and will show how the street could be adapted to improve safety for those walking, taking the bus, bicycling and driving.
The Trumbull County Combined Health District’s health educator, Kris Kriebel, said that the event is meant to spark action.
“We’ll be testing temporary safety measures, showing how our streets can work for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike,” Kriebel said. “This is a chance for our community to experience a safer future firsthand, paving the way for a more inclusive street design for everyone.”
The demonstration will start at 10 a.m. and end at 6 p.m. with a bike rodeo for kids starting at 1 p.m.
Visitors are also welcomed and encouraged to travel to the Safe Street on N Park by bike, by bus, or on foot to get the most immersive experience. The Warren Farmers Market at North Park Commons will also be taking place during the event.
“More than one fifth of Warren residents do not have a vehicle as a means to travel, leaving a need for bike infrastructure,” Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership health and wellness coordinator, Lydia Lynch said. “Biking and walking as a means of transportation are also shown to improve health and be more eco-friendly”.
A similar demonstration that drew over 100 participants was held in early July on Federal St. during the Youngstown Flea.
Officials say the event is a part of the Healthy Community Partnership of the Mahoning Valley’s vision to bring together organizations and residents who share a commitment to a healthier, more equitable Mahoning Valley.
