Why did Youngstown City Schools decide to start banning cell phones?
This upcoming school year, students in Youngstown City School District won’t have access to their phones during the school day.
Scholars in Youngstown are going to start using Yondr pouches to keep their phones secure but out of the way during class.
“Research has shown that cell phone use has negative effects on mental health and student performance,” said YCSD Superintendent Jeremy Batchelor.
What are Yondr pouches?
Starting this school year, students in fifth through twelfth grade will start the school day and place their phones in Yondr pouches.
They’re designed to temporarily lock away cell phones as well as block Bluetooth signals from connecting with devices like smartwatches and headphones.
The school said while there is a board policy prohbiting phones in school, the Yondr pouches will “strengthen the existing prosedures by creating a distraction-free learning environment.”
“Implementing Yondr pouches will help decrease distractions and increase engagement, which is why we are here; for scholar-centered academic success,” said Batchelor
The new YCSD rule comes after Gov. Mike DeWine signed House Bill 250, requiring all Ohio schools to establish an official policy governing cell phone usage during school hours.

There are exceptions for scholars with medical conditions and plans in place for emergencies, according to YCSD.
