Five years ago, Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership wanted to increase residents’ access to healthy, fresh food in the Trumbull County region.

They started partnering with corner store owners to sell fresh produce, collaborating with 15 retailers.

Through the Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership’s Healthy Community Store Initiative, five stores are able to sell produce on a regular basis to Niles and Warren customers.

“This program empowers local corner store owners to think differently about their place in the community, and gives them the opportunity to sell healthier options for their neighborhood,” said Lydia Lynch, the health and wellness coordinator at TNP.

On Aug. 17, stop by Red & White Supermarket, one of those corner stores collaborating with TNP to celebrate healthy food access.

Visit Red & White Supermarket at 1104 W Market St. in Warren from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. for a free cooking demonstration using produce, activities for kids and a chance to enter cooking supplies giveaways.

“Stores like Red & White Supermarket are changing the negative narrative around corner stores and solidifying themselves as a healthy food retail location. Red & White has done a wonderful job staying consistent and reliable in sourcing their produce,” said Lynch.

Stores like Red & White Supermarket purchase their produce from local sources, like Scarpaci’s Produce Wholesale in Warren and from students in the Beginning Farmer Training program through Central State University Extension.
