Celebrating 100 years at Mercy Health’s St. Joseph Warren Hospital in Trumbull County
This month marks the 100-year anniversary of Mercy Health’s St. Joseph Warren Hospital.
In 1924, the hospital was built by Dr. Chester Waller on Tod Avenue in Warren and daily operations were run by the Sisters of the Humility of Mary.
It used to be called St. Joseph Riverside Hospital, before the Sisters relocated the hospital to its current home on Eastland Avenue in 1996.
There were 50 beds in the original hospital, but in 100 years, there have been major upgrades and improvements at St. Joeseph Warren Hospital.
Char Gardiner is the president of Mercy Health’s St. Joseph Warren Hospital.
“For 100 years, Mercy Health’s St. Joseph Warren Hospital has cared for Trumbull County, improving the health and well-being of our communities and bringing good help to those in need, especially people who are poor, dying and underserved. We stand on the legacy of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary and continue to build on their good works,” said Gardiner.
Gardiner said this year, they’ve focused on expanding cardiac and cancer services.
St. Joe’s added both a level-three trauma care center and a level-two cardiac catheterization lab to better treat the Mahoning Valley’s healthcare needs.
In the cardiac catheterization lab, doctors can evaluate patients’ heart function and diagnose heart conditions.
“As we celebrate the history of St. Joseph Warren Hospital and reflect on the significance of the last century, we look forward to the next 100 years and beyond,” said Gardiner.
Youngstown-native Joshua Triplett was the event’s master of ceremonies.
Triplett has appeared in popular television shows, including ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘The Rookie’, ‘The Neighborhood’, and held the lead role in the feature film, ‘Forty-Seven Days with Jesus.’
Dr. John Luellen, president of Mercy Health hospitals in Lorain and Youngstown, spoke about St. Joe’s contributions for generations to the Trumbull County community.
“We are also energized by the hospital’s continued efforts to respond and adapt to the ever-changing health care needs of the county, as well as the Mahoning Valley as a whole. This year alone, St. Joseph Warren Hospital has added innovative robotic surgery, advanced cardiac care services and increased capacity to care for more patients. Mercy Health is committed to making strategic investments and growing access to care across the Valley to ensure our ministry is equipped to meet the health care demands of the communities we serve for the next century,” said Dr. Luellen.
