City approves construction of discount store at former Sparkle Market in Niles
The former Sparkle Market on North Main Street in Niles will soon be turned into a discount variety retail store, according to city officials.
Trumbull County auditor’s records show the property sale went through on July 25.
Niles city councilman Jimmy Julian said Dollar Tree will be built at the former grocery store, which was approved by council.
Renovations at the former grocery store will start “as soon as possible,” according to Julian.
“They’re trying to move in there as quick as possible,” he said.
Julian said there was a citywide moratorium on the number of dollar stores allowed to open in Niles, but the majority of councilors voted to allow another this Dollar Tree to move into the city.
“A lot of people are disgruntled that it’s that we’re adding another dollar store, but I believe it’s gonna be a high end one,” he said. “They’re gonna renovate the property; that it is an older property that needs a lot of attention, too.”
According to Julian, both the Stoneyard Grill and Tavern and the Sparkle Market were slated to be vacant.
The tavern closed in the spring and is now home to Tlaquepaque Tequila.
“That’s two of our largest buildings in downtown, both vacant,” he said. “But now fast forward, we’re going to have new businesses in both buildings.”
With Dollar Tree being an “outside, billion-dollar corporation,” Julian said they have the financial backing to be at the Sparkle location long term.
“It’s one of the tougher decisions I’ve made since I’ve been on council. Sometimes they’re not always easy ones, but I believe we made the right choice long term for our community,” he said.
