Community dinner celebrates rich cultural diversity of the Mahoning Valley

Through its series, Stories of Immigrants of the Mahoning Valley, the Mahoning Valley Historical Society celebrates the rich cultural diversity of the region.

As part of the ongoing series, community members learned about Hispanic immigrants like Dr. Consuelo Mendez, who’s from the Dominican Republic.

Another dinner celebrated Yemeni immigrants, like Dr. Rashid Abdu who founded the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center in honor of his wife.

The historical society just announced the latest Stories of Mahoning Valley Immigrants event, which will focus on notable figures and food from China.

On May 4, head to Canfield’s A La Carte Catering for a celebration of Chinese immigration and culture in the Mahoning Valley, featuring a live Chinese Dragon portrayal led by Mark Lee Pringle.

He’s the owner of the Coiling Dragon Chinese Kung Fu Studio in Girard.

Kevin Chiu will be speaking during the event. His father, Dr. Y. T. Chiu, immigrated from China and was a noted local plastic surgeon in the Mahoning Valley.

Dinner prepared by A La Carte Catering will be served at 5 p.m. at 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield.

The registration deadline is April 27; call (330) 743-2589 to RSVP.

Admittance is $35 for MVHS members and $40 for non-members.

The Stories of Immigrants of the Mahoning Valley series is coordinated by the Mahoning Valley Cultural Alliance, an advisory group under the umbrella of MVHS. This group was the former Ohio Cultural Alliance before joining MVHS in 2019.
