MIKE BROWN: Salem’s Jackson Johnson is headed to Tulsa
Salem High School’s graduating All-Ohio quarterback Jackson Johnson has made his choice.
The four-year starting Quaker signal-caller will continue his academic and football career for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the fall.
Johnson, whose goal is to be a college football coach someday, will be learning the trade from one of the best coaches in the business Kevin Wilson.
Jackson Johnson will connect with former Ohio State offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson at Tulsa
Wilson, who called the offense along with Ryan Day at Ohio State for the past five years, was named as the new head coach of the Golden Hurricane in the offseason.
Wilson is a brilliant play caller and has done so at college football’s highest level. That includes stops at Northwestern, Oklahoma, and Ohio State. He was also the former head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers from 2011-2016.
Tulsa finished 5-7 last season.
Who else is in the AAC with Tulsa?
The Golden Hurricane are part of the American Athletic Conference with schools such as East Carolina, Memphis, Tulane, South Florida, SMU, Temple, Wichita State, Central Florida, Florida Atlantic, Rice, North Texas, Alabama Birmingham, North Carolina Charlotte and Texas at San Antonio.
Jackson Johnson broke nearly every Salem passing record during his time with the Quakers, including the most passing yards in a game, season, and career. He is also an elusive runner outside the pocket and rushed for over 3,000 career yards, another record for a Salem quarterback.
Johnson played offense and defense for the North team in the recent North-South Football Classic at Massillon’s Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. The North won the DIV-VII game by a 27-16 final.
Johnson played at Salem under his father, Ron Johnson, who has been the Quakers’ head coach for 12 years. Ron Johnson is also a former head coach at Canton McKinley.
