South Range rolls over Garfield, 74-46
The South Range Raiders took care of business at home Friday with a 74-46 win in the second round of the Division II District Tournament against the Garfield G-Men.
It was a game early, as both teams played frenetically, trading baskets throughout the first five minutes of play.
“They made some tough shots early, they are a tough team,” said South Range coach Patrick Carden, “but we knew we could outlast them. We have a little more of a bench and were able to get more guys in the game, press them a little, and get up and down.”
South Range would end the first quarter on a 9-2 scoring run to open up an eight-point lead after one quarter. The Raiders would continue their run into the second quarter, outscoring the G-Men 25-9, blowing the game open by halftime.
Garfield would make a spirited run early in the third quarter as turnovers and cold shooting for the Raiders enabled the G-Men to cut the lead to under 20. A quick 5-0 run for South Range to close the quarter put the nail in the coffin.
Senior Landon Moore led the Raiders with 16 points in the win, with junior Tristan Toy chipping in nine.
Garfield guard Preston Gedeon was tremendous in defeat, leading all scorers with 27 points in the game.
South Range will continue their tournament road when they travel to Kent to take on Perry on Tuesday night.
“We are right back at it tomorrow morning,” said Carden. “They beat us in football this year, so I hope our guys have a little chip on their shoulder and get ready to go for a good tournament game on Tuesday.”
