Ursuline, Canfield win regional semifinal games, to meet Saturday in regional final
CANTON — The Mahoning Valley is guaranteed to have a state-qualifying boys’ basketball team after both Youngstown Ursuline and Canfield won respective Division II regional semifinal games Thursday night at the Canton Fieldhouse.
Ursuline, which finished No. 1 in the final mahoningmatters.com poll, advanced to a regional title game by rolling past the VASJ Vikings 85-44 in its regional semifinal. The Irish went out to a 21-9 lead after one quarter and never looked back in their win.
Meanwhile, Canfield followed the Irish victory with a 68-46 rout of the Warrensville Heights Tigers in the D2 regional semifinal nightcap.
Ursuline (23-3) will play Canfield (23-4) Saturday at the Canton Fieldhouse, with the winner advancing to next week’s state tournament at UD Arena in Dayton.
Both Ursuline and Canfield enter the game on long winning streaks. Ursuline has won 11 games in a row and Canfield has rattled off 14 consecutive triumphs.
Ursuline and Canfield played during the regular season. The Irish posted a 70-60 win over Canfield on Dec. 9.
