MIKE BROWN: Why I like the OHSAA’s new seven-division format for high school sports

There are two schools of thought as the OHSAA announced recently that beginning next season high school basketball divisions in the Buckeye State will be increased from four to seven.

Of course, the traditionalists favor the outgoing four-division format. However, many others love the idea that more schools will have a legitimate chance to get a team to state that might not have happened in the four-division setup.

Count me in as a fan of the seven-division format. Covering sports for the past 50 years, I have seen too many schools who have that once-in-a-lifetime team fall just short of state.

In the new seven-division format, I have little doubt that teams that never advanced to state before are going to have a better chance to experience that “state-bound” feeling.

I for one can’t wait to see that happen for those athletes and their fans.
