Two more firefighters coming to Liberty Twp., Austintown student scores in top 3% on PSAT

Two firefighter/paramedics join Liberty Township Fire Department

The Liberty Township Fire Department welcomed two new members with extensive experience to the team: Matt Gordon and John Rongyos III.

Rongyos has been a firefight and paramedic for 15 years.

He’s been recognized by the Cleveland Police Department with the Citizens Plaque Award.

According to the department, Capt. Gordon served the Brookfield Fire Department for 20 years.

Then he became the director of emergency medical services at Trumbull Regional Medical Center.

Two years ago, Gordon worked as a fire captain and paramedic for Vienna Township.

When the opportunity arose to come to Liberty Fire, he chose to come here to finish his 30-year career in public service, according to Liberty Township.

“Welcome aboard gentlemen, your Liberty Fire family is glad to have you with us,” the fire department wrote on Facebook.

Mercy Health earns awards

This fall, Bon Secours Mercy Health was recognized for helping the environment and placing women into leadership roles.

Seramount, a strategic professional services and research firm that studies equity and inclusion in the workplace, selected Mercy Health as one of the top 100 best companies to work for.

Mercy Health was also recognized nationally as one of the top ten best companies to work for as an executive woman in leadership.

Nicole Martel is the vice president of benefits, well-being and associate health for Bon Secours Mercy Health.

“We’re proud to be recognized as a Top 10 Company for Executive Women by Seramount,” said Martel. “Our ministry remains committed to providing benefits and services such as our paid parental leave, comprehensive education benefits and Be Well program that support and empower women, and all employees across our organization to continue to grow and prosper – in their careers and as individuals.”

More recently, Mercy Health earned environmental excellence awards from Practice Greenhealth.

All three of Mercy Health Youngstown’s hospitals in Mahoning Valley were recognized for their sustainability efforts –St. Joseph Warren Hospital, St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital and St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital.

They’ve transitioned to utilizing reusable pulse oximetry sensors and plastic-free PVC/DEHP for medical devices like feeding tubes and gloves.

The Youngstown team also hosts volunteer opportunities that promote sustainability throughout the year, like efforts to keep the City of Youngstown beautiful with Youngstown Streetscape.

“As health care providers, we are called to care for the health and well-being of our communities. This calling goes beyond caring for patients and extends to our Earth and its natural resources as well,” said Natalie Terry, Director of Mission for Mercy Health in Youngstown. “We know the health of the environment has a direct impact on human health outcomes. We believe it is our responsibility to be good stewards of our resources and to implement sustainable practices that leave the Earth a better place for future generations.”

Austintown Fitch senior scores in top 3% on PSAT

Austintown Fitch High School senior John Darnley is being recognized for his PSAT score.



Danley scored in the top 3% of all test takers in the U.S., which is over 1.5 million students.

Because of his high score on the test, he’s a semifinalist in the running for the National Merit Scholarship.

Darnley is part of the National Honor Society, varsity baseball and golf teams and takes honors and AP classes.

He’s also in the running to be valedictorian for 2024.
