Cardinal Mooney High School parts ways with football coach Carl Pelini
Cardinal Mooney High School administrators announced they wouldn’t be renewing Carl Pelini’s contract.
He worked as the head football coach and athletic administrator since the summer of 2020.
“We would like to thank Carl Pelini for his hard work and dedication to Cardinal Mooney High School. Coach Pelini answered the call three years ago and returned to his alma mater. We wish him the best as he moves on to new opportunities,” said Nicholas Beyer, president and principal of Cardinal Mooney High School.
Pelini spent many years on the school’s sidelines as an assistant and head coach after graduating from both Cardinal Mooney and Youngstown State University,
Looking for new coach
The school is now searching for someone to fill the vacancies in the upcoming school year.
“The next few years are going to be [a] transformation for Cardinal Mooney,” said Beyer. “We are excited to build on our tremendous legacy, elevate our academic offerings and student life experiences. We look forward to adding new leadership in our athletics department to help us realize that vision.”
Administrators are considering internal and external candidates to interview for athletic director and head football coach.

Carl Pelini’s career
After graduating from Youngstown State University, Pelini was part of several university football coaching staffs.
He previously coached at Kansas State, the University of Nebraska, Minnesota State and Ohio University.
In 2015, Carl joined his younger brother, Bo Pelini, working with YSU’s football team.
As a defensive coordinator, Carl worked briefly at Bowling Green University returning to YSU in 2019 and was named head coach at Cardinal Mooney in 2020.
He was briefly placed on leave as Cardinal Mooney’s head football coach “pending an investigation and final resolution” to a domestic violence case. The high school reinstated Pelini after the charges were dropped.
