Kent State Trumbull offers Youth Police Academy to local students
High school students entering their senior year are considering what they want to pursue in college.
Seniors contemplating law and criminal justice as possible career options in the Mahoning Valley have the chance to take part in the Youth Police Academy Experience being offered at Kent State University in Trumbull.
What is the Youth Police Academy Experience?
According to lecturer Lori Singer-Bare who works in the criminology department, this new program is specifically for students interested in pursuing careers in the criminal justice field.
“We carefully put together this program to give students a well-rounded experience. Our campus is fortunate to have access to great instructors with valuable years of experience,” said Singer-Bare, who also works in the Peace Officer Training Academy.
Students who complete this program are each eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend Kent State Trumbull in the fall of next year.
Staffing shortages are impacting public safety around Ohio, according to Singer-Bare.
She said it is vital that police academies be more intentional when recruiting new learners. “Public safety is a concern for everyone,” she said. “This is a great time to get into an academy and start a career because there are so many opportunities locally and around the state.”
When does the program start?
The four-week program begins Oct. 3, and classes will be held 9:30-11:30 a.m. every Tuesday.
During the final session on Oct. 24, students will be celebrated with lunch and a scholarship ceremony.
Each class is limited to 50 students, who will learn intoxicated driver detection and prevention, introductions to investigating crime scenes, making traffic stops and utilizing radar.
They’ll also discuss community race relations and how this impacts day-to-day policing.
The spring program will follow the same schedule beginning Feb. 27 of 2024.
To enroll for the upcoming fall program, visit Kent State University’s registration website and sign up by Sept. 4.
