Ohio among top 15 states with most underprivileged children

August is Child Support Awareness Month.

According to the Children’s Defense Fund, one in six children in the U.S. live in poverty.

The Children’s Defense Fund also reports a child is abused or neglected every 48 seconds.

To bring awareness to the condition of underprivileged children throughout the U.S., WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 26 key measures of neediness.

The data set ranges from the share of children in households with below-poverty income to child food-insecurity rate to the percentage of maltreated children.

Experts looked at homelessness among children and youth in each state, as well as the quality of education and health setbacks.

States with most, least underprivileged children

According to the data from WalletHub, the top three states with the most underprivileged children are Alaska, Mississippi and New Mexico.

The states whose children aren’t as underprivileged as others, they experience less food insecurity, homelessness and higher incomes.

WalletHub’s list shows these states are New Jersey, Utah and Connecticut.

How does Ohio rank?

Ohio ranks fourteenth overall for most underprivileged children living in the state. Here’s a breakdown of how the state ranked in each category:

  • No. 8 – states with high rates of infant mortality
  • No. 16 – the percentage of children living in households with below-poverty income in state
  • No. 22 – percentage of maltreated children
  • No. 13– rate of child food-insecurity
  • No. 27 – percentage of uninsured children
  • No. 23 – percentage of children in foster care
  • No. 12 – percentage of children in single-parent families
  • No. 25 – child and youth homelessness rate
