Howland man gets 27 months for receiving stolen property and evidence tampering

The following cases were handled Monday by Judge Cynthia Rice of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court:

  • Derek J. Hopson, 28, of Dawson Drive SE, Howland, pleaded guilty to a three county indictment charging him with receiving stolen property, failure to comply with order or signal of a police officer and tampering with evidence. Hopson was sentenced to a 27-month prison term The case involved a police pursuit of a stolen vehicle on May 25, 2023, that started in Elm Road in Warren and ended near railroad tracks in Lordstown. Prosecutors said Hopson was one of the occupants of the vehicle and was throwing items out of the window during the chase, including a firearm and a bag of suspected drugs.
  • Levi B. Charlton, 24, of Ewalt Avenue NE, Howland, was sent to prison for two years after admitting to violating his probation for a 2019 conviction of failure to register as a sex offender. Because of his sex offense, the judge said he was ineligible to be sent to NEOCAP, a lockup rehab that teaches life skills. The probation offense involved being charged in May 2023 with criminal damaging by Howland Police because of a broken car windshield, reports state.
  • Aniya M. bunch, 20, of Niles, pleaded guilty to a third-degree burglary felony and two counts grand theft motor vehicle. Bunch will be sentenced after undergoing background report by probation officers. She faces up to 72 months in prison. Prosecutors said the case was investigated by Girard police who reported a Kline Street couple had reported their vehicle stolen after a former tenant, identified as Bunch, had broken into their home and stolen two sets of vehicle keys. One of the vehicles was found in Mansfield and required a towing bill of $160. Bunch had given the keys to another vehicle to another person, who turned them intopolice, prosecutors said. Bunch’s attorney said she plans to pay the restitution of $160 to the victims prior to sentencing.
