ACTION south side community marketplace opening to fight Youngstown food insecurity
The City of Youngstown has plans to launch a community marketplace at the former Bottom Dollar store on Glenwood Avenue.
The marketplace is going to build community engagement and help everyone have access to essential resources, according to ACTION executive director Rose Carter.
She said the marketplace is a partnership between ACTION (Alliance for Congregational Transformation Influencing Our Neighborhoods) and Youngstown Mayor Jamael “Tito” Brown.
The marketplace is opening to address food insecurity in Youngstown neighborhoods.
”The launch of this community space marks an important milestone in our collective efforts to address the challenges faced by our community,” Carter said. “By working together with our valued partners, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of our residents, particularly those affected by food insecurities. This space will not only provide immediate relief but also serve as a catalyst for long-term positive change.”
What will be in the community marketplace?
Carter said the center will be an extension of her group’s mobile market for grocery shopping and other businesses, including the possibility of a drugstore.
She said the mobile market would be open three days a week to start.
Carter said the plan calls for the addition of a pantry with food and other items for those in need.
Additional plans will be announced at a press conference Thursday at noon.
