The Columbiana County Prosecutor’s Office announced charges have finally been filed in a murder that’s been unsolved for more than thirteen years.

A Columbiana County grand jury indicted Charles Bogart Jr. of Hammondsville.

Bogart was indicted on charges of aggravated murder, with an additional charge of murder and firearms specifications for the death of Salineville resident William “Sonny” Young, 69, back in 2010.

A grand jury indicted 48-year-old Bogart this week for the death of Young.

According to Columbiana County Prosecutor Vito Abruzzino, the county formed a cold case unit in 2022.

“A key priority of my administration has been to focus on the large number of cold case homicides in the county. To that end, the resources and manpower focused on the death of William ‘Sonny’ Young have finally led to an indictment by the Columbiana County grand jury thirteen years later,” said Abruzzino.

What happened to William ‘Sonny’ Young?

Young was killed in the summer of 2010 after being shot at his farm on Spring Valley Road, according to police.

Local and federal law enforcement agencies wouldn’t find his body until over a week later after searching extensively.

Columbiana County Cold Case Task Force, the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Columbiana County Prosecutor’s Office took another look at Young’s death in 2010.

Their investigation led to Bogart, who was already convicted of identity theft, fraud and various offenses of receiving stolen property.

Bogart served a short prison sentence concerning the theft and fraud charges in 2011.

Abruzzino said new evidence was found by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office.

The new evidence hasn’t been released to the public yet.

“I also cannot understate the importance of the Columbiana County Commissioners in providing the additional resources needed to form and fund the Columbiana County Cold Case Task Force,” Abruzzino said. “For that, we as a law enforcement community thank them for making these challenging cases a fiscal priority.”
