How to stay safe while driving during cold, high winds in Mahoning Valley
The Mahoning County Emergency Management Agency has issued some advice to stay safe on and off the roads ahead of upcoming winter weather.
There are high winds reaching up to 40 miles per hour in Mahoning, Trumbull and Mercer counties.
A wind advisory is in effect for Trumbull and Mercer counties until tonight.
Tonight, National Weather Service projections show more wind, rain and a potential for a small amount of snow after midnight and into Wednesday.
Temperatures will be around 35 throughout the rest of the week and more rain is expected to appear.
Drivers should use extra caution today, especially vehicles that sits higher off the ground. At home, secure any objects outdoors that could blow away.
The Austintown Park has closed today to keep residents safe from inclement weather, and plans to open again tomorrow.
Staying safe
In addition to checking local media resources during severe storms, the Mahoning County EMA also recommends keeping an emergency kit in your car and home.
Some things to pack in an emergency kit include non-perishable foods that do not require cooking, batteries and flashlights.

High winds and rain-soaked soil can bring down trees and impact power lines.
Customers should always assume downed or low-hanging power lines are energized and dangerous. tay at least 30 feet away and use extra caution where downed lines are tangled in trees or other debris. Report downed lines ASAP by calling 911.
