Poland senior’s art selected for YSU showcase
Katie Biggs is a senior at Poland Seminary High School. She’s an artist who found a passion for ceramics her junior year.
“The environments I am surrounded by have always influenced my artwork. I want to help others feel at peace with their own surroundings,” said Biggs.
She recently earned the Scholastic Art and Writing Silver Key award in ceramics.
Her award-winning ceramic will be on display at the Northeastern Ohio Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition opening at 1 - 3 p.m. this Saturday at Bliss Hall at Youngstown State University.
The event is free and open to the public.
“The connection this ceramic piece played in my portfolio was the use of real leaves impressed into the clay because my theme was nature,” she said.
Biggs plans to attend Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and focus on an Interior Design major with a business minor.
Calling all local business owners for Kids Career Fair
The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center is calling on local business owners to participate in a special event for kids.
It’s happening at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center next month in partnership with City Machine Technologies, Inc. and Valley STEM.
They’re looking for business owners around the Mahoning Valley area to participate in the Kids Career Fair from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Feb. 10.
They’re asking businesses to provide a fun table activity for children during the event, as well as pass out giveaways.
“Children are our future,” said Claudia Kovach, vice president of City Machine Technologies. “One day, they will be applying for jobs in town. Wouldn’t it be nice to learn some ended up in their specific career field because they attended this event and learned about a new line of work that wasn’t taught at home or at school?”
Apply to participate in the event and register online here; parents and kids are welcome to attend this free event.
