Youngstown-Warren Airport one step closer to becoming a primary airport
Legislation to designate Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport as a primary airport, which gives them access to money from the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program through 2028, passed out of the Senate Commerce Committee according to Senators J.D. Vance and Sherrod Brown.
The Airport Improvement Program provides grants for the planning and development of public-use airports.
“Today we took a major step forward in ensuring that Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport can affordably, effectively, and reliably serve the Mahoning Valley and allow visitors and businesses to easily reach Northeast Ohio,” said Brown. “With this legislation, the Youngstown Airport will be able to serve more people and provide more opportunities for the entire region’s economy to grow.”
The airport is currently home to the Youngstown Air Reserve Station, but doesn’t offer commercial air services right now.
Brown and Vance introduced the bill in the Senate, while former U.S. Representative Bill Johnson (R-OH) and U.S. Representative Dave Joyce (R-OH) passed companion legislation through the House of Representatives’ Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
“The Youngstown-Warren Airport is a crucial asset to the Mahoning Valley,” said Vance. “I’m hopeful new federal funding will be used to repair the airport’s runways and ensure the continuity of reliable air operations for years to come. I’ll do all that I can to ensure AIP eligibility for the Youngstown-Warren Airport is signed into law.”
Guy Coviello, president and CEO of the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber, said the airport is critical to the area and thanked the legislators.
“This is wonderful step forward for the Mahoning Valley economy,” said Coviello. “Our airport is critical to maintain private aviation, and Trumbull County’s largest employer – the air station – is dependent upon it. It has been a pleasure working with our Federal delegation to work on legislation that supports a valuable piece of the Valley’s infrastructure.”
