Police were dispatched to Marc’s grocery store in Boardman Thursday afternoon to investigate a theft involving a store employee.

According to the Boardman police report, a cashier was caught on surveillance video on multiple days making improper transactions at her cash register.

The first instance occurred March 22 when the cashier activated a Doordash gift card for $25. According to the receipt, the gift card was paid for with cash, but the cash register was never opened. The report states that the $25 was then refunded, but the gift card remains active.

The report then states that later the same day, the cashier printed an old customer receipt. She then scanned the receipt at the register and entered it as a return. She took the amount from the receipt from her cash drawer and walked off camera, according to the police report.

What happened during the second incident

On March 25, the cashier was caught on camera again making the same transaction with another Doordash gift card, once again for $25, the report states.

The manager told the officer that he wished to press charges for the thefts, totaling $91.51. The report states that the officer then requested to interview the suspect.

According to the report, during the interview, the cashier explained that the two gift card transactions were done for practice and that she didn’t know they stayed activated. She claimed to have put them back on the gift card rack.

The report then states that when asked about the $41.51 in cash that she removed from the register, the cashier said that a customer had requested the return but left without the money. She then tried to run the cash to them in the parking lot but didn’t find them. She claimed to have put the money in the “blue bag,” a type of amnesty bag used for extra change.

According to the report, the officer decided not to make an arrest and allow the investigation to continue because it was unknown where the cash and gift cards ended up. The cashier was informed that her employment was terminated and was escorted out of the store.

The report states that the security footage and receipts were logged into Boardman Police Department evidence. The case was forwarded to the detective division for further investigation.
