Boardman police officer Daryn Tallman and K-9 officer Kylo visited first-grade students at St. Charles School on March 29 for a demonstration in the school gymnasium.

Tallman spoke for about 20 minutes, answering questions about the Boardman police K-9 program and showing Kylo’s abilities to the students and staff present. The officer and the K-9 then demonstrated a mock drug sniff using a drug-scented rag hidden in an air vent. Before the visit ended, the officer also passed out K9 coloring books and rubber wristbands to the students.

4 tips for people who encounter a K-9 police dog

The Boardman police website has tips for residents who encounter a K-9 unit in their neighborhood:

  • Keep pets inside. The K-9’s track human scent and ground disturbance. The officers would like to minimize other distractions in the area.
  • Do not come outside when a K-9 team arrives; rather, wait for the officer to come to your door.
  • Do not go outside to check on the suspicious noise, or to see where the suspicious person has gone. Doing so may contaminate the suspect’s trail.
  • Do not turn on outside lights. The K-9 teams are used to working in the dark.
