A Jefferson County man pleaded guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter and burglary related to a cold case that’s been unsolved for almost 15 years.

Judge Megan Bickerton sentenced 49-year-old Charles Bogart Jr. of Hammondsville Monday to 16 years in prison for the involuntary manslaughter of William “Sonny” Young of Salineville.

Investigators with the Columbiana County Cold Case Task Force prioritized finding out what happened to Young in 2010.

Police say Young was shot and killed in the summer at his farm on Spring Valley Road.

Who was credited for breaking a nearly 15-year-old case?

The county prosecutor said detectives with the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and members of the Prosecutor’s Office Staff deserve credit for a “landmark conviction on a case that was nearly 15-years old.”

“Without the Cold Case Task Force and investigators from multiple agencies coming together and analyzing this case from the ground up, we would not be where we are today,” said Columbiana County Prosecutor Vito Abruzzino.

A Columbiana County grand jury indicted Bogart, who lived in Hammondsville, last November.

“I also cannot thank the Columbiana County Commissioners enough for providing me the resources needed to reinvigorate these ‘cold cases’ to the point that we are seeing indictments and convictions,” said Abruzzino. “To those families that have loved ones that were lost to a homicide without resolution, know that they are not forgotten. We will continue to do everything we can to see that justice is ultimately done.”
