A man tried to steal money from a Lowe’s cash register and says he needed it to take care of his family after getting caught, according to a Boardman police report.

The man, who was employed at Lowe’s on 1100 Doral Drive, was caught committing the act on surveillance footage by his supervisor. The employee – whose name was redacted – took cash on three different dates by pocketing some of the money he received during cash transactions, according to a police report.

The supervisor reported to Boardman police that he noticed a cash register falling short for several days, and each time it felt short it was the same employee working the register. Police said he verified the employee in question took $200 on May 9, $100 on May 21 and $200 on May 22.

The employee admitted to the crime when he was approached by the manager on Thursday and said he did it because of financial strain, according to the police report. Boardman police were called soon after.

The Lowe’s told police they wished to press theft charges against the employee and will provide the necessary documentation, such as the surveillance footage, at a later date. Boardman police issued a criminal trespass warning to the accused employee upon the store’s request and escorted him off the premises.

The man was not arrested but police informed him that he would be arrested if he returned to the store.
