Voters pick Sen. Michael Rulli in special congressional election
State Sen. Michael Rulli received the most votes in a special election for Ohio’s sixth congressional district held yesterday.
Voters in Columbiana and Mahoning counties picked the Republican senator to represent them in Congress, according to the Associated Press election results.
The special election was held to fill the seat of former U.S. Representative Bill Johnson, who gave up the job in January to work as president of Youngstown State University.
Sen. Rulli will complete the rest of Johnson’s term and be back on the ballot in November for a full term starting in January against Democrat Michael Kripchak.
A total of 32,627 ballots and 54.7% of the votes cast during the special election went to Rulli, according to AP election results; 45.3% of the votes went to Kripchak, around 27,062 ballots cast.
The sixth Congressional District includes Belmont, Carroll, Columbiana, Harrison, Jefferson, Mahoning, Monroe, Noble, Stark, Tuscarawas and Washington counties.
