Detective fatally shot after gun falls from bag, AZ cops say. ‘Unimaginable tragedy’

A detective was killed when a loaded gun fell from a bag and discharged, shooting him in Arizona, police said.

Detective Ryan So was unloading equipment from a vehicle after finishing a search warrant and arrest operation June 13, the Scottsdale Police Department said in a news release.

So was moving a bag when a gun fell from it and hit the ground, police said. As it did, the rifle fired and struck him.

Other detectives tried to help So, but he later died at a hospital, police said.

He had been with the department for nine years and previously served in the U.S. Navy for four years.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy for both Ryan’s family and his police family at SPD,” police said in a Facebook post.

So is survived by his wife and three young daughters, Fox 10 Phoenix reported.
