After transferring from Tiffin University, Youngstown State defensive back Jaylen Castleberry is looking for his first game action since 2021 as the Penguins open a new season.
He’ll continue his journey with a Youngstown State football scholarship.
Head coach Doug Phillips gave him a scholarship following Wednesday’s practice.
“There’s a lot of faces I see here that will be standing here in the future.,” Phillips said, pointing at the team’s coaching staff. “You gotta trust the process. But today, going through camp and really jumping out and showing what he can do (on defense and special teams). His journey wasn’t easy. academically wasn’t easy. Transferring wasn’t easy.”
And the players erupted when the coach said Castleberry’s high school (St. Edward High School) in Cleveland.
Castleberry played his freshman season at Tiffin University after winning a state title for St. Edward’s. At Tiffin, he was credited with 12 tackles.
