Ursuline rolls past Austintown Fitch, 32-14
Ursuline took the opening kickoff 100 yards and never looked back as the Irish defeats Fitch 32-14 in Austintown to improve to 6-0 on the season.
Junior Jy’Quise Liason ignited an already raucus crowd with the kickoff return to give the Irish a quick 6-0 lead, which proved to be enough as the Irish dominated on both sides of the ball to hand Fich just their second loss of the year.
“Jy’Quise has made plays in all three phases of the game for us this year, He’s a very talented player who makes big plays for us,” said Ursuline head coach Dan Reardon. “It obviously was huge to start like that. And it keeps coming back to our defense, they did a phenomenal job.”
How the defense keyed Ursuline
The defense for the Irish was the story of the game, holding a hot Falcons offense to just one touchdown coming on a touchdown run by senior running back DJ Williams. A drive set up after a turnover in the third quarter giving the Falcons a short field. The other Fitch touchdown came on a kickoff return of their own from Dan Evans III.
Jack Ericson’s highlight-reel play
Ursuline senior quarterback Jack Ericson had himself a night on the road. Ericson ran for two touchdowns, a five yard draw in the first quarter and a sensational 25 yard scamper after Fitch had cut the Irish lead to 5 late in the third quarter, leaping a would be tackler on his way to put his team up two scores.
Ericson also threw a 48 yard touchdown to junior wideout DC Ferrell in the second quarter.
Irish running back Christian Lynch also had a big night, rushing for 185 yards and a score on Ursuline’s last play from scrimmage to bookend their night with touchdowns.
Ursuline, who is ranked No. 3 in the AP poll will take their undefeated record to play at St. Vincent-St. Mary next week. Fitch has the week off, hosting Massillon in two weeks.
