AUSTINTOWN - The powerful Austintown Fitch girls’ softball team opened its season in impressive fashion Monday posting a 5-0 win over visiting Division II power Canfield.

Fitch is the defending Division I state champion and returns many standouts from that team.

Leading the way in the win over Canfield was the Falcons’ junior star right-handed pitcher Sydnie Watts.

Watts twirled a complete-game one-hitter while striking out 15 Cardinals.

Watts, a junior and Georgia Tech commit, is one of the top prep pitchers in the nation.

Offensively, Fitch pounded out seven hits against Canfield.

Fitch didn’t lose a game last spring while going 22-0-2. The Falcons won the big school state title in 2023 with a 6-1 win over the Whitehouse Anthony Wayne Generals on June 3 at historic Firestone Stadium in Akron.

Fitch is the favorite to repeat as the Division I state champion this spring.
