Penguin City Beer releases retro Guins collectors cans for YSU football fans
Penguin City Beer has announced a new collector’s item available for sale starting this week with a connection to local history.
Check out Penguin City’s “Evolution of Pete” collector’s cans, available in the Penguin City Taproom starting Wednesday and throughout the Mahoning Valley this week.
Celebrating “Evolution of Pete”
Aspasia Lyras-Bernacki, co-owner of Penguin City Beer, and Michael Pontikos, brand manager of Penguin City Beer, said they’ll also be offered in the concessions at all home games for university basketball and football games.
“We love working with YSU Athletics and we love celebrating our partnership with these new designs every year. I love the excitement as people anticipate the new cans. It’s becoming a Youngstown tradition,” said Lyras-Bernacki.
The team at the brewery commemorated the history of YSU’s mascot, Pete the Penguin, by including retro iterations of Pete from over the years onto the can’s design.
Pontikos said past editions of the YSU cans had the current mascot or a block Y. Still, this year, he wanted to do something limited-edition and unique.
“I’m a retro buff, so this...was a no-brainer,” said Pontikos. “I wanted to go old school and bring back some of the earlier renditions of Pete. I found some really neat stuff in the archives that took some time to digitally retouch for this project. I wanted to make sure they retained their original look and feel without looking too perfect in this digital world.”
Pontikos said the “Evolution of Pete” design from the archives looks great on the collector’s edition cans, and they’ll be coming out with limited-edition merchandise with the same retro design portrayed.
YSU football kicks off Thursday against Valparaiso
The announcement from Penguin City Beer comes just in time for fans to support the YSU football program.
Youngstown’s football season starts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Valparaiso University.
